Primary care is the first stop when you're sick, but it is also the foundation for keeping you healthy. Unfortunately, today's healthcare system leaves physicians with limited time to truly understand their patients, resulting in care that focuses more on treating illness than preventing it. At SHIFT, we believe primary care should be proactive, personalized, and built around long-term relationships that help patients optimize both their lifespan and healthspan.

With nearly 20 years of experience in family medicine, sports medicine, and preventive care, Dr. Brian Donohue brings a thoughtful, patient-centered approach to helping individuals take control of their health before problems arise. Read on as Dr. Donohue shares his philosophy on modern primary care, why prevention is one of the most powerful tools in medicine, and how the best interdisciplinary healthcare team in Chicago is helping patients build healthier, stronger futures through personalized concierge medicine.

Getting to Know SHIFT’s New Primary Care Doctor: Dr. Brian Donohue

Dr. Brian Donohue of SHIFT

Dr. Donohue, welcome to SHIFT! Can you tell us a little about your background and what inspired you to pursue concierge medicine in Chicago?

I’ve been a family physician in the Chicagoland area for over 15 years. I moved to Chicago for medical school, discovered how much I love the city, and decided to stay! I did my residency and sports medicine fellowship at Resurrection Medical Center on the northwest side of the city. I practiced medicine privately in Schaumburg for a couple of years before becoming faculty for the family medicine residency and sports medicine fellowship at Resurrection Medical Center. At Resurrection, I served as faculty for five years and then had the opportunity to become Program Director for the residency program. I served in this role for eight years and enjoyed mentoring the doctors of the future. We cared for patients in all settings, including the hospital and the ambulatory clinic.

My move to concierge medicine was inspired by SHIFT's comprehensive care model and executive physicals. SHIFT offers a much deeper, more detailed assessment of a patient’s health. With the team at SHIFT, patients receive comprehensive testing, nutrition advice, and exercise recommendations all in a single visit. SHIFT also places a strong emphasis on disease prevention, which is often overlooked in more traditional primary care settings. As a longevity doctor in Chicago, I'm excited to help patients make healthcare decisions with so much information.

You've practiced medicine for nearly two decades and have experience leading residency programs at top Chicago hospitals. How have those experiences shaped the way you care for patients today?

My experience leading a residency program has emphasized the importance of communication, shared decision-making, and having a great team around you! More specifically, it’s important to help patients identify where they are on their health journey, discover their goals, and create a plan that is meaningful and attainable for them. Being a true partner in their health journey and following their progress is something I find extremely rewarding.

You also completed a fellowship in primary care sports medicine. How does that additional training influence your approach to helping Chicagoland business leaders stay healthy and active throughout their lives?

My additional interest in sports medicine highlights the importance of movement and physical activity. Being physically active pays dividends for a person’s physical and mental health, both now and in the future. As a physician, I enjoy developing an individualized exercise plan for a patient or helping them through an injury so they can stay active.

Why Primary Care Needs to Change

Many people think of primary care as something you only need when you're sick. How has the role of primary care evolved over the past decade?

Over the past several years, society’s focus has shifted from treating ailments to preventing disease. Primary care has benefited from this attention shift, with providers and patients having more in-depth conversations about how we can prevent chronic medical conditions, especially things like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and heart disease

What does proactive primary care actually look like in practice?

For me, proactive primary care centers on helping patients identify health concerns, state what matters to them, define barriers to success, and create a personalized, sustainable healthcare plan. The goal is for patients to build small daily habits that invest in their long-term health.

What are some of the biggest health risks you see developing silently in busy business professionals before they ever notice symptoms?

For a busy professional, the biggest health risks center around three main things: Inactivity, stress management, and nutrition. We can easily overlook these three areas as we pour ourselves into our careers and what we're trying to achieve. The puzzle is figuring out how to make time in someone’s day to build habits around regular exercise, healthy food choices, and managing stress through hobbies, relationships, and adequate sleep

The SHIFT Difference: Why Patients Choose Us for the Best Concierge Doctors in Chicago

What attracted you to SHIFT and our interdisciplinary approach to healthcare?

Health is shaped by many aspects of our lives, and a medical doctor can only address a few. A person needs other specialists on their medical team to maximize their health. That is why, at SHIFT, our team of nurses, registered dietitians, and physical therapists is so valuable and exciting! It's an efficient way to assess someone’s health and create a plan to improve it!

How does SHIFT's concierge model allow you to practice medicine differently than a traditional primary care office?

In my past practice, health insurance coverage and productivity measures dictated how much time a doctor could spend with a patient and what treatments were available. It’s impossible to deeply care for a whole person in 15- or 30-minute time slots, back to back, all day long. On top of that, the sheer volume of documentation and paperwork to justify your care easily adds hours to each workday. It often felt that I was having a relationship with my computer, and not the patient in the room. At SHIFT, the technology falls into the background, supporting the healthcare team and allowing the doctors to fully engage with their patients.

One of the biggest advantages of SHIFT’s membership-based healthcare is having physicians, registered dietitians, physical therapists, and fitness experts working together. How do you feel that collaborative approach improves patient outcomes?

To me, it just makes sense to have all these smart people in one place, evaluating someone’s health, and collaboratively making recommendations in a cohesive package for patients. From a patient’s perspective, it’s enlightening and motivating to get actionable information and data focused on improving their health. With this data, it’s easier to set goals and make evidence-based decisions in real time with their doctors.

How do advanced diagnostics and comprehensive executive physicals help you identify risks that might otherwise go unnoticed?

Having all this health data at the time of the visit lets the doctor and patient make real-time decisions together. As a primary care physician in Chicago, I find this one of the most exciting parts of joining SHIFT. In addition, comprehensive executive physicals offer a chance to view someone’s health from a different perspective, recognizing that work and personal life both influence it.

Helping Chicagoland Business Professionals Build Longer, Healthier Lives

How do you create a health plan that fits into the life of someone with a demanding career instead of becoming another item on their to-do list?

For a health plan to not be a checklist item, it must include things that are meaningful and fulfilling for the patient. This means identifying what types of exercise patients like to do, what kinds of foods they like to eat, and pointing out the real-life benefits they can expect. All of these recommendations must connect to a patient’s values and the positive benefits they can bring to daily life.

What's one lifestyle change that consistently has the greatest impact on long-term health and longevity?

Movement. I am a huge believer in movement. That can mean so many different things. It can be taking a walk after dinner, getting up from your desk throughout the day for a short walk or bodyweight exercises, or parking farther away at the store. It can be running, riding a bike, swimming, lifting weights, doing an exercise class, playing tennis or basketball. If we want to be active and vibrant in our later years, we need to do it consistently throughout our entire lives. It should not be “I’ll get in shape next year”; it should be “What am I going to do today?”

For someone who feels healthy today, why is now the right time to invest in membership-based primary care in Chicago?

Health is a lifelong journey. The earlier we start paying attention to our health and preventing illness, the more likely we are to improve our quality of life and reach the depth and fullness we are looking for.
